Ra đời từ thập niên 1950 bởi Tiến sĩ Erwin Gemmer, sơn tĩnh điện dựa trên nguyên lý điện từ: hạt sơn và bề mặt mang điện tích trái dấu, giúp lớp sơn bám chặt, bền đẹp và chống ăn mòn vượt trội.

Hiện nay có 2 loại công nghệ sơn tĩnh điện chính:

Sơn tĩnh điện (powder coating) hoạt động dựa trên nguyên lý điện từ. Trong quá trình phun, hạt bột sơn được nạp điện tích âm (-) thông qua súng phun, trong khi bề mặt sản phẩm kim loại được nối đất và mang điện tích dương (+). Nhờ lực hút tĩnh điện, các hạt sơn bám chặt, phủ đều lên toàn bộ bề mặt.
